It’s time to announce a big change. Over the next few months, I will be relocating to Brussels, Belgium. Living abroad will bring many new challenges and hopefully, lots of new experiences. I speak no French or Dutch so that in itself will be tough, but we’ve been assured that many Belgians speak English and there are lots of expats already in the city. My most pressing issue is to figure out how to get a big dog and two cats into the country. So if anyone has sage advice on airlines, routes, or anything else- please share.
We are planning to travel just after Christmas and so much has to be done between now and then. Because of that, I probably won’t be as available on social media as I have been. Be patient, I’ll be back. 2017 will bring the publication of a new book called Tender Tulips, Dark Diamonds:A Ghost Story. Part of the story takes place in the Netherlands and this move will allow me the opportunity to explore some of the places mentioned in that book. Oddly enough, I’ll be writing a new novel set in Colorado at the turn of the last century while I’m in one of the low countries. So on to new adventures!

Yes, this is happening at a good time. The whole year has felt so surreal. I think we’re going to continue to see clashes into 2017 because we are so divided. But then again, it isn’t that the EU doesn’t face its own challenges. Thanks for wishing me well. The same to you!

Leaving Colorado for Belgium … best of wishes to you. Once settled, and when the opportunity arises to tour the Belgian countryside, it is beautiful. And, yes, many do speak English and very well. If anything, it’s our colloquial phraseology that does not translate well.

In order to leave the US, your animals have to be current on all their shots and have a physical exam within 2weeks of departure. You also need to have a certificate from the Dept of Agriculture. Most vets can help you with that (to include FedExing all the papers to and from Dept of Agriculture). You should also contact the Belgian Embassy to see what requirements they may have for allowing animals to enter their country. Most airlines will let each traveler take one animal each into the cabin but you have 3. The animals must fit in a carrier that can fit under your seat so you large dog may not be allowed iin the cabin (unless it is a service dog). Contact the airlines. Some countries ( e. g., UK) make you put animals in quarantine for 6 months) .

Thanks, Jaton. The requirements are pretty strict. I think we have a route figured out using Lufthansa. One of the problems I had was that our dog broke the weight limitations even for cargo on some of the airlines. Lufthansa doesn’t have a weight restriction. Hopefully, this will all come together.

Good luck with your move. My wife and I moved from Vienna to Hong Kong for 2 years (2013 – 2015) and we took our 2 cats with us. Initially I tried to arrange the transportation myself but gave up after a couple of weeks of international phone calls and conflicting information on various websites. We finally got a firm to take care of it. Was a great relief to have them well cared for during both moves.

Yes, I have contacted one. It’s a bit pricey. I think we may have come up with a route using Lufthansa through Munich. I have get all the pets a passport completed by a vet and then endorsed by the USDA. Pain in the neck dealing with the USDA! Thanks for your advice, I’m still thinking about using the courier.

My husband’s job. Thanks! We never had a chance to go abroad in his 20 years in the AF. Now retired but still working, this came up. The kids have flown the coop and we’re jumping at this chance.
